Malachite
Malachite powder was used as eyeshadow, pigment for wall painting, and in glazes and coloured glass in ancient Egypt around 5,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks used it in children’s amulets, the Romans to ward off the evil eye, and the Chinese to decorate vases. Today, it is an important gemstone ornamental mineral, used in cabochons and carvings.
Turquoise
Beads made from Turquoise dating back to 5000 BCE have been found in Mesopotamia, making it one of the first gems to be mined and cut. For most gem uses, turquoise is cut en cabochon. Turquoise is the favourite gemstone for the 11th anniversary, and it is considered a good luck stone.
